Welcome to Australian Finches. This site is created for those interested in the keeping and breeding of Australian Finches. We will constantly keep updating this site in the attempt to offer all its readers the best bit of advice for Keeping and Breeding Australian Finches.  The contents of are collated and based on individual experiences and perspectives. We have also utilised some important resources and listed relevant content where appropriate.  We welcome your input and encourage you to send us a quick note with any of your thoughts and comments.
For the beginner, this website will be a great resource. When I purchased my first pair of finches I did battle to find information on general care and breeding. Most of it was spread all over various breeding websites and although books are great, they are costly and not always at arms length.
Take the time to search through the varieties of Australian Grassfinches, You will find information on each bird along with Images, distribution maps, videos and tips for keeping healthy birds. We have also taken the liberty of listing a few commonly kept foreign finches on this site. I hope to expand this coverage as the site grows.
You may come across a few pages that are not fully complete. I hope to have these pages finished and ready for viewing very soon and do apologise for the inconvenience.

Common finch diseases

Spotting a sick finch is most of the times an easy task, especially if you know sign to look for. Most sick finches will become very docile and not move at all, they will stay clear of other birds and their activities and almost lost total interest in their surroundings. Food intake will drop and the bird unless treated may not fully recover.

Finch Essentials

Before you dive into and buy your finch your first pair of finches try and be prepapred for their arrival. Of course you want to ensure your birds are healthy and happy from the minute you released the into the cage so lets go through some of the basics and not so basics.

If you are deciding to breed your finches it recommended you get well prepared before you start. If your birds are already in the nest and laying eggs then hopefully this page will assist you in making sure you have what you need and also be prepared for any unforeseen circumstances. The below are guidelines only and I do ask that you also  research the breeding habits of your finch species.

Fostering is a term used whereby a pair of birds will care and rear young birds that are from a different pair or species. These birds will accept the young and care for them until they are fully fledged. Fostering is normally used when young are abandoned, lost or scared away from their natural parents or due to the unfortunate loss of one or both parents.
